5 Skincare Mistakes You Might Be Making (And How to Fix Them!)

Over-Exfoliating Your Skin
Exfoliation is a key step in your routine, but there can be too much of a good thing! Each exfoliator has different guidelines; some might be gentle enough for daily use, but not others. You risk drying out your skin and stripping the barrier if you over-exfoliate. Fix: Try exfoliating twice a week with a hydrating exfoliant like Dermalogica's Hydro Masque Exfoliant ($64,1.7 oz)
Skipping Sunscreen
Even on cloudy days, you are still exposed to UV rays, so you need to apply sunscreen (Schoonmaker, 2006)! Sun exposure can lead to hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, and skin cancer. Fix: Make sunscreen your last skincare step in the morning with Sorella Apothecary's Tinted Dew Drops SPF 50 ($56, 1oz)
Sleeping In Makeup
This can clog your pores and cause unwanted breakouts. Also, leaving your skin covered in makeup disrupts your skin's nightly renewal process. Fix: Use Dermalogica's Precleanse ($49, 5.1oz) oil to remove all makeup, oil, and dirt to get your skin ready for the second cleanse. Follow that with a creamy cleanser to deep clean such as Dermalogica's Intensive Moisture Cleanser ($45, 5.1oz) or Sorella Apothecary's Apricot Mango Cleansing Milk ($44, 5.7oz).
Trying Too Many Products
Who doesn't love to try new things? That's great, but if you try too many products simultaneously and have a breakout or irritation, you won't know which product is the culprit. Fix: Try new products a week apart to see how your skin reacts. Also, ensure you aren't using too many products with the same active ingredients.
Not Moisturizing Oily Skin
Your skin needs a combination of oil and water hydration to be at its optimal state. If you have oily skin and do not moisturize, your skin can overcompensate with more oil, leading to breakouts and clogged pores. Fix: Use a water-based moisturizer such as Dermalogica's Active Moist ($49, 1.7oz).
